Why Do Teens Commit Suicide? |
|
Wednesday, 03 May 2006 |
“My parents don’t listen to me. I have no one to talk to,” the most frequent complaint of my 12 – 14 year-old Junior High School students.
Recently,
a Kensington, Maryland community experienced two teen suicides, one
week apart. A 16 year-old boy. A 16 year-old girl. Several months
before… another teen death, probably suicide, same community, same
school. Suicides are contagious. Teen depression is real. The boy shot
himself. The girl walked in front of a train. The third death is still
being analyzed.
Almost always, when friends, parents, look back, they see the deadly signs. Drug abuse is one sign.
What’s happening that our parents don’t hear, or really listen, to their children?
So, I studied depression...studied listening. Then, wrote a booklet for my students, their parents, and other teachers, called, Teen Depression and Suicide.
How
do you recognize teen depression? Most teens think they’re the only
ones with “bad” feelings. Often, they can’t name how they feel, that
is, describe their emotions. I found that teens want their emotions to
be understood by their parents, without judgment or condemnation.
Acceptance of, and understanding of, emotions are what real listening
is about.
